What's It All About ... Alphie?!You hear so much about web pages, web sites, domains, HTML ... but what does this all really mean? And who really cares about this stuff? And why should you be concerned?
As you have been browsing the Web, looking around and finding new things people have put up for you to see, you are finding more and more things happening. Places to go, things to do, things to see ...
The more you see, the more you start to wonder ...
Or, do I have to be some kind of techno whiz, or computer guru, or computer geek for that matter, to really do this kind of stuff?
- How Can I Make My Own Place?
- Can I Make My Own Place?
- And if I Can, What Am I Really Making?
The answer to these questions is ... NO!
There is no magic involved here. There is not some hidden language reserved for the few elite who only think in computer terms, and work for hours with their computers every day, night and day, to accomplish this type of work.
The World Wide Web is comprised of literally 1000s and 1000s of computers all linked together through out the world. This means that there may be a computer across the street from you that is linked to a computer in Japan, or France or anywhere else you can imagine.
This is accomplished through the Internet. The Internet brings all these computers together as if they were one huge computer. You dial up your local provider to establish a connection to the Internet. Once you have made this connection, you now have several choices as to what you are going to do next.
You may wish to send an email to a friend across town, or someone in New Zeland. You might want to look up information about Thomas Jefferson, or your favorite rock band. You may want to check out the latest music CDs or books that you can buy, or shop for a new car. Or, you might want to chat with people from around the world in real time, just by typing from your key board.
All this must be very expensive to do, right? Wrong! You are paying your monthly charge to your local dial up service. With that local phone call, the entire world is suddenly available to you at the click of a button.
Your only limitations are your own imagination.
Here, we are going to explore the World Wide Web. And perhaps, learn how to create our own peice of the Web that we can call our own.
The Web is reached via a browser, such as Netscape or Internet Explorer. The browser brings to us various Web Sites that people have designed to bring you information about a subject or topic that you might be interested in learning more about.
A Web Site is a location on the Web that provides some type of information, service, merchandise, etc. When you view that web site your browser is actually retrieving that information and bringing it to your computer via your connection through your local provider.
You are obtaining this information from various URLs, Uniform Resource Locators, which are pointers to specific peices of information located somewhere on the Web.
The URL is more or less an address, much like a house address. It is a unique, one of a kind identifier, that no matter where in the world you are, that URL, or address, will all take you to the same place on the Web.
But how did that information get there? And what is that makes that information available to us?
The key to it all is a language called HTML.
