Setting Up Your Tools ...So you think you are ready to manage your own domain? Before you go wild ... or become lost ... let's make sure that you have the right tools for web page design.
You can buy all kinds of software for designing web sites, but you should consider starting with the basics and really learning what you are doing, before getting into some elaborate software for your web page development.
The software that we recommend is our suggested software based on ease of use, friendliness and power. This is not to say that there are not other software packages available, but that we have worked extensively with these particular packages and found them to be ideal for both the beginner and advance user. We are in no way affiliated with the owners of these products nor compensated to say use these programs. These programs are chosen based on our own experiences in web design.
To write your HTML files, we recommend a simple text editor. You can use NotePad, or we recommend a slightly enhanced program called SuperPad. SuperPad allows for larger files, has Global Search and Replace features, and a few other assorted features that extend its capabilities beyond NotePad.
For FTP access, we recommend CutieFTP software. CutieFTP allows you to configure it for each individual web site that you maintain. Its enhanced features combined with its ease of use, make it ideal for the beginner or advance user.
For TelNet access, we recommend NetTerm. NetTerm is a clean, simple to use Terminal package. It allows for telnetting from one domain to another, FTP access to another domain, and an assortment of other advanced features.
For Graphic Design work, we recommend Paint Shop Pro and LVIEW. Both of these packages will help you create the graphics that you need to enhance your web site.
For Email, we recommend Pegasus. Pegasus is by far one of the most powerful email software. Its ease of use allows for beginners or advanced users to customize their email setup.
For Web Browsers, we recommend for use with Windows 3.x NetScape Gold, and for Win95 Internet Explorer. Either Package works in both environments, but we have found that we have less problems using them this way, based on your operating system.
The current versions of all of these packages are readily available at Stroud's or Tucows, among other sites on the Internet.
